The church of Agias Zonis

Churches

Situated at the entrance of the village’s core is the main church of the community which is dedicated to Agia Zoni. The church was built in 1998 and the inauguration ceremony was held in 2001.

It is a three-roomed church of Byzantine type. The interior of the church is adorned with a wooden-carven iconostasis which was designed by Mr. Nicos Taliadwros, as well as with hagiographies which were painted recently. The church is 22 metres wide and 32 metres long.

According to tradition, many visions have shown the residents of Apesia to the place where the icon of Agia Zoni might be. However, several excavations which have taken place since 1955 have not revealed the icon. Therefore, the residents decided to build a church at this place.
